Who We Are

The Birmingham and Black Country Bat Group began 1986. The following is a brief history of the group, and an introduction to our key members.

History...
It began in 1986 at Birmingham University in the Winterborne Gardens. Nick Pinter and Mick Finnemore from the University and what is now the Nature Centre ran a 'bat weekend' as part of 1986's 'International Year of the Bat'. Simon Phipps attended, as did Chris Sherlock. From this event Simon, Nick and Mick took the bat group forward, with Chris joining in more actively a year later. For many years, Simon guided the bat group including Ray & Sue Dutton, Tony Jones, Andrew Jennings and others. Simon was a licensed bat worker and trainer, and Chris & Ray were able to obtain their licenses with his support. Chris, Ray and Sue have maintained the group since.

The Re-launch...

2005 saw a move forward, and plans for a re-launch were underway. In November 2005, the new website was completed, and on March 22nd, 2006 the first meeting of the 're-launched' bat group took place. The 2006 AGM saw the election of our committee of staff. The bat group holds many events and training workshops, and is looking forward to an active 2008! Why not come along to a meeting or event and see what all the fuss is about?
